The Sun and Her Flowers Was Not as Good As Milk and Honey: My Quick Review

Let me start this by saying I truly believe that this book and Milk and Honey should be required reading for high school students...or at least college students. It is a bit explicit but not in a raunchy way. As a female, I know the struggle that it is to grow up and make it through high school. Admittedly, I didn't have that bad of a high school experience in comparison to some of my closest friends. But what I do know is that girls are mean and boys suck at that age. We tend to also be mean to ourselves during that time. We don't cut ourselves a break and we compare our body, intelligence, and talent to others...high school can be cruel.

Now this book isn't about a high school relationship. In fact, it's about the struggles of adult relationships and growing to love yourself. So for me, the lessons of these poems seemed to be something that would resonate with students of a high school age. This book could be heavily dissecting in an English class and would help teach about relationships, self-esteem, love, and many other things. I think the real beauty of poetry is that each reader will resonate differently with each poem and therefore will learn and take away different things when done. The Sun and Her Flowers will hit you, no matter what age.

This is Rupi Kaur's high anticipated sequel to Milk and Honey. There don't have to be read in any particular order, but I will say that personally, I feel like Milk and Honey were better. The Sun and her Flowers didn't land with me as often. I have re-read Milk and Honey several times, but I actually decided against buying the Sun and Her Flowers. I borrowed it from the library with the intention of purchasing it later, but after reading it, I decided it wasn't a book that I would read again and again. That is simply because I have found other modern poetry that resonates more with me.

If you haven't read any modern poetry or aren't sure where to begin your poetry story, this is a good start. I would say read The Sun and Her Flowers and then maybe Milk and Honey if you're wanting more. If you have read these books, I'd love to chat! What did you think of the book? What modern poetry books do you recommend?

@concealerandkeri That is so awesome and inspiring to hear.
I agree 10000% that high schoolers should be required to read this book. Im a foster parent who takes in teenage girls, and our last placement had this book and it helped her so much. With all the poetic tendencies and all of the symbolism, this could totally be dissected in any english class.
