Michelle Wolf Is My Hero and Here's Why

If you haven't heard the name Michelle Wolf in the past 48 hours, you probably live under a rock. There has been buzz all over the internet and mainstream news about her speech at the Presidents Correspondents Dinner. I've seen both sides of the spectrum when it comes to people's thoughts on whether her comedy was tasteful or not and I personally thought it was nothing more than what they asked of her....just a comedy skit.

Here are all the remarks if you have not seen it:

The Complaints

I have a few issues with those that are bashing Wolf for her stand up that night. 1st, what did everyone expect her to get up there and do? She is a comedian after all and I mean....she made jokes. It's pretty much her exact job description.

2nd, is anyone really going to argue that she is the 1st person to drag a president during her correspondents routine? Here's a little article for you. Most comedians before her have made remarks about the president, his cabinet, and news outlets. So simmer down and take a breather. Trump may have been the punching bag this year, but he wasn't the first and he won't be the last.

3rd, I have seen about 800 people blow up about Michelle Wolf's comment about Sarah Sanders "lies and eyeshadow" comment.

"I actually really like Sarah. I think she’s very resourceful," Wolf said. "She burns facts and then she uses that ash to create a perfect smoky eye. Maybe she’s born with it, maybe it’s lies. It’s probably lies."

This was NOT an attack on her looks. That seems to be what most people are upset about. I'm hearing a lot of "how dare she make comments about another females appearance."...I want to say that I absolutely think its hysterical that we are talking about the "eyeshadow" portion of that joke and not the part where she calls her a liar. Nowhere in that sentence does it say she is ugly or any other derogatory remark about her appearance. It's almost more of a compliment about her looks if you want to get down to it. And just playing devil's advocate here, but why is it okay for the President to make any negative remarks about the looks of a woman, but it wasn't okay for her? I am genuinely interested if you have a statement about that.

4th, I don't know why or how they choose the speakers/comedians for each correspondence dinner but I'm really interested in why they asked Michelle Wolf to speak that night. Knowing she used to write for Trevor Noah's show, a liberal-leaning comedy news show, why would they choose her? If they didn't want to hear any jokes that may have shown a light on some negative instances during this presidency, why didn't they choose someone a little more conservative? While the right continues to oust everyone else as snowflakes, they may want to consider just how fragile some of their egos are. Sure there are ridiculous and outrageous people on every spectrum of the political sphere, but if you're going to dish it, you gotta be able to take it. Just a thought.

I also want to remind everyone that the White House Correspondents Dinner is literally billed as a celebration of the freedom of the press and the 1st Amendment...

Why I Admire Her

Let's start with the fact that being a comedian is freaking hard and in my humble opinion, she's doing pretty well for herself. She's worked for a host of shows and now has her own Netflix show. I'm all for women working hard and going after what they want! So I have much respect for her in that regard. I mostly admire her for having the balls to get up there and make jokes she KNEW were not going to land with that audience. I commend her for saying things out-loud to that group of people, that not many would say to their faces. Dear Michelle, thank you for being a strong and confident woman up there and not backing down when you very easily could have. I admire your strength and attitude.

Whether they like it or not, she's allowed to make jokes about anything and everything and quite frankly, being able to take a joke is a huge tell of your character. Sure jokes can go too far, but emotional intelligence is everything in today's world and I think we have a few political figures that need to brush up on that. It's hard to say where the line is in comedy, but I do know that being offended by every joke or comment made about you, is a huge sign of lacking confidence. That's not something I want my leaders to struggle with.

As a wrap up to this blog, I just want to say that everyone is entitled to their opinion and their feelings on a certain matter but we must all remember that just because we are offended does not mean we are right. I would be more than happy to have a discussion with anyone and everyone, regardless of opinion, on this topic, however I will not engage in mindless insults. If you're coming here to argue in a way that is unproductive, please take that elsewhere.
