A Quiet Place is Oscar Worthy

The Academy Awards tend to make me mad every year, because my "Best Picture" fave never wins.. *cough cough* Three Billboards! While I don't think a Quiet Place is necessarily a Best Picture contender, it SHOULD be an Oscar contender. However, it's pretty early in the year, and I'm nervous that this film will have been pushed aside when nominations arrive.

Let's Get a Few Things Out of the Way
1. Yes, the movie is almost silent and you'll read lots of subtitles
2. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD OPEN ALL YOUR SNACKS BEFORE THE OPENING SCENE! Trust me, you're gonna be self conscious eating popcorn, let alone busting open that box of cookie dough bites.
3. This is NOT a movie about the creatures, it's about the journey of a family, and most importantly, the sacrifice of parents.
4. Yes I am very serious about that Oscar nomination...
Not Your Average Scary Movie
Let me start by saying that this film is on par, in terms of originality, with Get Out. And that's saying a lot, considering Get Out was an actual Oscar winner. I felt like I wasn't watching an overdone re-write of the same alien story that we've all seen a hundred times. We got a fresh take on an end of the world scenario and I was legitimately scared and concerned for this family. If the film itself doesn't get an Oscar nomination, the actors should. These characters can't hide behind dialogue and they have to tell a story with their emotions. It's similar to Millie Bobbie Brown as Eleven in Stranger Things. Emily Blunt, the mother figure in the film, portrays an excruciating scene and it's incredibly well done. Millicent Simmonds is the stand out actress for me. She plays the deaf daughter and it obviously felt beautifully authentic because well...it was! She has to span a wide range of emotions in this film, again, all without words. It's just very well acted, written, and directed.
Like I said before, this movie is less about the monsters and more about the family. This family has to go to absurd lengths in order to stay quiet and stay alive. You very quickly learn why these characters must remain silent and the horrific events that take place if they don't. The daughter in the film is deaf, both on and off screen, and so the use of sign language is prominent. It also kind of feels like this family has the upper hand in this world because of their knowledge of ASL. It's a very intriguing take on the genre and I HIGHLY recommend. Even if you aren't a horror fan, this movie is more suspenseful than anything and I think lot's of people will enjoy this.
My Favorites and Rating
So these are some of my favorite aspects of the movie. First off, this isn't a movie where the characters can just get lucky and escape. Make Noise. You die. It's pretty simple and there is no mercy when it comes to killing off characters. I am also a big fan of the fact that the film started off at day 89. We don't have to spend all this time figuring out what the creatures are and what their doing and most importantly, how to survive. We are thrown straight into a plot where this family has figured it out and we get to see what happens. And the BEST part of the film is that the characters ARENT IDIOTS!! How many times have we seen a scary movie where we hear a sound and the main character goes looking for it...in the dark...with no weapon...NO! I have audibly screamed at a TV because I get so frustrated with stupid characters. In A Quiet Place, they hide, the run, they do everything in their power to live! LIKE A NORMAL PERSON!! I don't know if i'm just being overdramatic, but it's really a breathe of fresh air to see this. I give this movie an overall 4.5 out of 5 stars.
So I'm going to have my eyes peeled during the Oscar season. If a Quiet Place isn't nominated, I will be writing the academy a strongly worded letter! lol Anyway, have you guys seen this yet? If so, PLEASE tell me your thoughts! Is it Oscar worthy in your opinion? Also what movies are you looking forward to?
