A Sunday Without Walking Dead: How the Finale is Effecting Me

DON'T READ IF YOU HAVEN't WATCHED SEASON 8

Sundays are sometimes the busiest days for us. Hockey games, cleaning the apartment, preparing for the week ahead, and Sunday dinner with Clayton's family...and that's just the beginning of it all. Those that know me know that I am very much a planner, but I have to be really flexible on the weekends because of all the stuff we have going on. But, there is one thing on Sunday's that I refuse to give up: The Walking Dead!
I have been a Walking Dead fan since episode 1. I actually watched the 1st episode on a whim. I wasn't doing anything that night for Halloween and decided to just try it out. I was hooked and there was no turning back. I would and still will cancel plans to watch the episodes. If that sounds selfish...oh well. It's my 1 thing that I do for myself on Sunday nights and I look forward to it every weekend.
The worst moments in a Walking Dead fan's life are when a beloved character dies or the long break between the mid season finale in December and the Mid season premiere in February...For season 8, we had both.
My Thoughts on the Finale
I will start by saying that this season is one of the best season, in my opinion. Negan is, by far, one of the best characters to appear on the show! He is the perfect villain, the bad guy you love to hate, and a character you beg to know more about. I honestly am not ready for him to die. That might sound crazy, but this is as excited as I've been about a bad guy in the Walking Dead since the Governor. I have NOT read the comics, so I don't know where the show is headed, and I don't really want to know, but I can't wait to see how the writers toy with Negan's psychological issues and explore his inner turmoil.
The finale itself was great. I think it was one of my favorite episodes. It's right up there with "The Day Will Come When You Won't Be", when we lost Glen in a sole crushing way. Both this episode and the Glen episode were heart wrenching, but those are the most memorable, intense, and well written episodes. Those are the episodes that keep me coming back for more. No one is safe and that's a terrifying yet sobering thought. This finale came with a lot of explosions and uncertainty. The final scene probably left some people a little relieved or even happy...but for me, I was heartbroken. You can ask Clayton, but I 100% cried. Carl risked his life to save the members of Alexandria and when we find him in the sewer at the end of the episode, he lifts a bandage to show a gnarly bite in his torso. My heart sank.

Like I said, if you didn't like Carl, this probably didn't matter much to you. For me, I always sympathized with him. He's a kid who had to grow up in a post apocalyptic world...so don't tell me you wouldn't be a little moody every now and then too! I'm moody when I have a stressful day...add in zombies, lack of food, killing my mom, a new little sister, AND the ordeal of puberty...yep I'd probably be a little bitch too! So I feel you Carl! I am on your side! So as someone that felt for Carl, it made my heart heart to know that his future is coming to an end. I will say that I don't love that we didn't get to see the moment of the bite...as fans who are watching original characters dwindle, the writers and director should have given us the full bite scene. And if you don't feel bad for Carl, take a moment to consider what Rick is going to endure. He lost his wife and now his son. The life he has before the apocalypse is vanishing. Nothing will ever be the same. Will this break him? Will he be able to lead this group and destroy Negan? I know I am SO ready to see what questions the next half of the season will answer!
What Now?
That Sunday was really hard. I am so glad that Talking Dead is on immediately following each episode. I need someone to talk me through these heavy moments! I came to the realization this past weekend that I don't get to enjoy my Sunday Walking Dead ritual again until February! So now I'm lost on Sundays to be honest. 8 pm is wide open and I usually fill it by blogging. I guess I might try watching Fear the Walking Dead so I can keep the apocalyptic world in my life!
